Since the topic comes up so often these days, in this video I finally sit down and address the topic. TLDR: No, of course not. But there’s a lot of subtlety to the question, and certainly there’s a lot of complexity to the question that deserves an in-depth answer. In this video, shot from Mid Beach, during @hackmiami conference I answer the question of “What Is Money”, and discuss all things Bitcoin and Counterparty.

  1. Although I appreciate you giving your opinion I was hoping you'd cover the basics and provide some background and logic for said opinion. It took 5 minutes to basically say "I think its not money".

Currency is a medium of exchange, a unit of account, portable, durable, divisible, fungible. Money is all of those plus a store of value.

Bitcoin meets the requirements for a currency. There is some debate on if it is money but I fall in the camp that it is money so long as the network has intrinsic value. Bitcoin is superior to currencies and money in many ways. Its more exchangable due to the internet, its more portable, more durable, more divisible more fungible. Time will tell if its a store of value outlasting gold but it is a store of value at the moment and is only growing and gaining momentum.
